"Why people do not use buses?" - New Study Confirms ICMA Project Premises !

23.09.10

A recently published study by the Scottish government analysed the reasons why many peopl are reluctant to use buses. The Scottish Centre for Social Research made interviews among 12 population groups of "infrequent or non-bus users" in order to give a general understanding about people`s perception of local busses, their overall travelling experience with buses, their indivdual modal preferences and their attitude towards future bus use.

The respondents had a general negative perception of bus use. Consequently they prefer the use of the private car for their journey. The car is suposed to guarantee reliable door-to dor transport . However, closer analysis of attitudes towards  future bus use show, that a large group of people is willing to use the bus, if substantial barriers preventing them from doing so would be removed. Improvement suggestions by the study participants will be considered in developing policy recommendations.

Most of the general recommendations are in line with the project premises and objectives of the iCMA Amobilife project on closing mobility gaps, e.g. "to make it as easy as possible to use the bus including making it easier for infrequent and non-bus users to find out about times, fares and routes, removing the need to have exact fare".
