The Northern Community Ambassadors scheme, a project lead by Northern Rail and supported by amobilife lead partner Transport for Greater Manchester was awarded with the 3rd place at the ACoRP Community Rail Award in the 'Passengers Matter' category.
The ACoRP - Association of Community Rail Partnerships - is a federation of over 60 community rail partnerships and rail promotion groups. Since 2005 the community rail awards emphasis is on rewarding excellence and promoting best practice in community rail development, recognising the ordinary people doing extraordinary things on behalf of the railway and the community. Thus the AcORP committee awarded the Northern Community Ambassadors Scheme, which aims to promote the use of local rail services with socially excluded groups around four stations in Greater Manchester (Rochdale and Farnworth) and East Lancashire (Blackburn and Brierfield). The so-called community ambassadors are involved in a range of awareness raising activities such as visitig community faith centres or organising group accessibility trips to show people how to use rail services. The feedback to these group accessibility trips iwas higer than expected, not only the number of participants in the group accessibility trips is surprising (224 people), but also the feedback in the local media. It is expected that the scheme will attract more new customers over the coming months.
The involvement of Transport for Greater Manchester, lead partner of ICMA amobilife, concerns the facilitation of the steering group meetings of the community ambassadors scheme, as well as the overall promotion of the scheme. Furthermore, TfGM is part of the steering group, together with the East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, the Department for Transport, the AcORP and Northern Rail.
