ICMA amobilife project element awarded with Scottish Transport Awards

11.07.11

SPT and the Glasgow City Council have been awarded with the prestigious Scottish Transport Awards. The Glasgow Social Work Voluntary Club transport project won the first prize in the category „Excellence in Technology and Innovation“. Supported by the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland, the Awards are about recognising and rewarding real improvements to local transport in Scotland. With its  project, SPT and the City Council provided a „tangible example of efficiency savings“ (Transport Times Events). Furthermore it has been emphasized that the project has made „clever use of technology to protect services“. For the last  two years, SPT and the Glasgow City Council have been facing enormous budgetary challenges. In this critical local economic climate savings have been inevitably also with regard to non-stationary transport provision. The recently developed ICMA amobilife Cost and Price Model, which has been appplied for the first time in Glasgow, predicted that a probable integration of current demand responsive transport services could reduce operational costs of non-stationary transport services by nearly 300.000 €. On this purpose a collaboration between the Glasgow social work department and SPT began and the Glasgow Social Work Voluntary Club transport project was born. While SPT provided its expertise in scheduling technology, voluntary social work groups kept up the transport services in order to ensure the continued operation of non-stationary council transport services. According to SPT, the project cut operational costs by 40%, which is far beyond the saving potential originally predicted by the ICMA amobilife Price and Cost Model.

The project has not only proofed that efficiency savings could be made without a loss of servcie quality, but also that the ICMA amobilife Price and Cost Model is a useful planning tool for transport service providers.
